In the 4th year under the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (A.D 1406), Deshin Shekpa, the fifth Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu Sect of Tibetan Buddhism (namely Karma in the Chinese documents of the Ming Dynasty), at the invitation of Emperor Yongle, upon his reaching Nanjing for visiting, was granted the title of "Great Treasure Dharma-Raja" with permission for hereditary. The conferment of Great Treasure Dharma-Raja was a significant progress in the history of relationship between the central governments and Tibetan local governments in the Ming Dynasty. Then Living Buddhas of all generations of this sect shared the title. This is the letter Emperor Yongle wrote to Karma to express gratitude for his visiting Nanjing and paying tributes.
