In 1705, Mongolian Khoshut Lajang Khan murdered Disi sde pa sangs rgyas rgya mtsho and deposed Tshangs dbyangs rgya mtsho and appointed Ye shes rgya mtsho as the sixth Dalai Lama without authorization, which turned out to be the dispute on the sixth Dalai Lama. This is the memorial form the Lama Bsod nams rdo rje, resident in Xining, to Emperor Kangxi regarding Lajang Khan's arbitrarily recognizing the fifth Dalai Lama's reincarnated soul boy and the fifth Panchen Erdeni offering gifts to Emperor Kangxi. (Rinchen Dolma)
Chinese Translation (Suo Wenqing, Guo Meilan: Qing Court's Collected Archives on Panchen Erdenis, Religion and Culture Press, 2004, Page 30):
Bsod nams rdo rje humbly beg to report Your Majesty regarding what I have learnt:
According to the imperial edit, along with the secretary of the Grand Secretariat Laduhun et al, we gathered related officials and announced the imperial edit at the meeting place in Cagan Tuoluogai area. Apart from the detail of reconciliation details which being reported by another memorial, here report that all the alliance princes, Beiles, dukes, Taijis etc. are in great joy for Your Majesty's broad propagation of Buddhism doctrines and the great favor to decree imperial edit for reconciliation the dispute amongst their brothers. Now all of them expressed in their reports to work hard all together to follow the imperial edit. However, on my observation, as the prince Zhaxi Batuer's problems are not settled down yet, there are still a number of people discontent with the prince because of his poor healthy and old age, and obsession of alcohol and his blindly listening to the subordinates Dresang et al, although they expressed they would all do their duties as before and not fail Your Majesty's imperial favor. With keeping in mind Your Majesty's previous instruction to let us report the prince's situation in detail and explicitly, hereby I report it in detail and do not dare to have any conceal.
What's more, about Lha bzang khan's arbitrarily recognizing one of the Qubilgans of the grags Buri as Dalai Lama. I have collected ideas from the princes, Beiles, dukes, Taijis and others. Based on what prince Zhaxi Batuer said: we all have stopped Lha bzang khan's various misbehaviors according to imperial edits. But now, Lha bzang khan arbitrarily recognizes Dalai Lama without reporting to Your Majesty for judgment and approval. We would rather die than be convinced. After elaborately read the memorials from Lha bzang khan and letters from Panchen and documents from Chokyong and other materials, I found the Dalai Lama related information are not specified in detail yet. Moreover, there exists inconsistency between Lha bzang khan's memorial and document on Cuizhong's observation. It's found that, Zhuoliketu Qisang Batu, dispatched by Lha bzang khan, does not know the details when I inquired him. What's more, previously, Your Majesty has decreed imperial edit to let Lha bzang khan dispatch the three Qubilgans to Beijing and let them not stay in the west area based on Your Majesty's smart insight that uncertainty may be caused by the Qubilgan being called Dalai Lama later. As Lha bzang khan already knows all these detail, how could he still arbitrarily let him enthroned as Dalai Lama. Therefore, what Lha bzang khan did is not according to Your Majesty's instruction on propagation of Tibetan Buddhism and delivering peace and wellbeing to living creatures, but for his own interest. Now we have made clear the place where Lha bzang khan having the Qubilgan of the grags Buri enthroned as Dalai Lama. As much is at stake, after meeting with the secretary of the Grand Secretariat Laduhun, we are concerning it's not convenient going there without the imperial edit, thus we decide waiting for Your Majesty's imperial edit for instruction. Zhuoliketu Qisang Batu, the envoy dispatched by Lha bzang kha, also stay in Boluochong Ketaijita Lanbumu waiting for imperial edit.
Moreover, Panchen offers gifts to Your Majesty as follows: one Amitayus Buddha statue, three Buddhist relics, a string of amber prayer beads, one Hada. Lha bzang khan's envoy brought the above gifts here. We have collected and saved the gifts while waiting for the imperial edit and will have treatment based on Your Majesty's imperial edit accordingly.
Hereby carefully report to let Your Majesty know
(The Emperor's response): For the gifts Panchen offered, treat it after the current west area issue was settled down. What you reported, the issue of west area, seems it cannot be settled down by soon. For the issue the Deliberative Council discussed at present, you should discuss soon and report to me with detail, and then discuss the issue of west area further at that time in your report. Based on report, Wang’a Labutan has died. The message is not for sure, but largely is true. The west area issue will not concern much if the man has died. You should keep investigating it though.
