This thangka is the gift offered by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama to Chairman Mao at his presentation in 1954. In the center of the artwork, Chairman Mao stands on the city gate-tower of Tian’anmen silhouetted against the backdrop of a wafting Five-Star Red Flag, flanked and bottomed separately by 9 color pictures about the army engaging in various works upon the peaceful liberation of Tibet. This mirror-framed artwork features Auspicious Eight Treasures, Pigeons, Cranes, Ska Deer, Elephants and other patterns. The bottom is inscribed with a passage that reads, “Dear Chairman Mao, I will follow you forever to establish a new Tibet and a great China. Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso in October 1954.” (Zhang Li)
